Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Working at the Canadian Centre for DNA Barcoding with the Centre for Biodiversity Genomics is one of the greener jobs I have had. We sequence the DNA of mostly insects from around the world and contribute to the International Barcode of Life (iBOL). However, all scientific endeavors have some necessary waste production, and one that really blew my mind was the hundreds of plastic assay lids that we recycled before even starting the extractions. I started hoarding them for my own use and from that, made a miniature greenhouse. Hot glue binds with this kind of plastic so that was all I needed to join the plates together. I used the tops of sponges for the carpets, and paper, toothpicks, cardboard, bottlecaps, and paint to make the rest of the props. I made my own mini clay pots and used real dirt. I found a perfect green wire at dollarama in the gardening section to make my miniature hose. It was a cute quick little project with minimal purpose other than to reuse the waste for something more interesting.
